Is salt the answer to your nose and sinus problems !?
A large proportion of my patients have long term nose and sinus problems, and often have been treated with many different treatment regimes (and may have had surgery on their nose and/or sinuses elsewhere) but continue to have problems that are a blight on their quality of life.
Through The Canterbury Nose Clinic, I can advise you on the optimal treatment plan for your particular nasal problem.
Part of this plan may involve further medications and possibly further surgery, but I have long espoused the value of simple saline (salt water) nasal douches.
You can make your own solution (please see on this website for further information) but I would generally recommend commercial solutions such as Sterimar (which is an aerosol solution) , Emdur or in particular Sinurinse by Neilmed on www.neilmed.com. This comes in a powdered form, with a squeezy bottle which is custom made for the task. It has the effect of flushing out inhaled allergens, dust and atmospheric pollutants as well as aiding the passage of mucus through the nose, which if it stagnates can lead to ongoing nasal and sinus infection. It is entirely ‘natural’ and will have no side effects on you or your nose, although I have noticed some patients mention that it may cause some discomfort in their ears if the solution is flushed through the nose a little too aggressively !
More recently, an article in The Daily Mail was pointed out to me that seemed to take this idea one step further by getting patients to sit in a ‘salt cave’ . This is said to have originated in Eastern Europe, and I do believe in keeping an open mind on all ‘homeopathic’ treatments as long as they at the very least do not do you any harm, and this seemed to be an intriguing idea along those lines.
I have no experience of this treatment and would not go so far as recommending it, but if anyone has experienced it I would be interested to hear from you ! Something to watch for the future perhaps…
